About us

Sustainability Leaders is a global network designed to help organisations develop a cross-functional sustainability programme We believe that improving environmental and social sustainability cannot be isolated to one part of a business. To make progress, it must be embedded across the entire organisation. Our platform is formed on three foundations to support member companies in achieving this change: • Collaborative learning between a cross-functional group of sustainability experts; • In-depth research to inform strategy development, governance, and metrics; and, • Practical case studies and benchmarking information to compare best practices. Sustainability Leaders is brought to you by the team behind Procurement Leaders.

  • UK telco answers call for EV charge points 🔌 UK telecoms company BT Group has announced an ambitious pilot to convert phone and broadband cabling boxes to power electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. https://lnkd.in/e-3PH82R The company’s first EV charge point will come online in Scotland within a few weeks before it explores the potential of converting 60,000 ‘green cabinets’ across the UK. To deliver EV charging, engineers retrofit the cabinets with a device that enables renewable energy to be shared to a charge point alongside the existing broadband service. As full-fibre broadband rolls out across the UK, the junctions can be refitted to provide further EV charging points. Although there are 795,000 EVs on UK roads – plus some 590,000 hybrids – at present, only 53,000 public charging points are available to drivers. With the government looking to increase this number to 300,000 by 2030, the BT Group project could play an important role in decarbonising the country’s transport system. ♻ Discover more (exclusive to Sustainability Leaders members) ♻ - Working Group Summary: Innovation in design for sustainability: https://lnkd.in/dT6M3M6g - Case study: Colgate-Palmolive’s approach to working cross-functionally on sustainability projects: https://lnkd.in/efTC8pYN

  • 🍃 AIRFARM promises to take sustainable agriculture to new heights 🍃 With agriculture accounting for 70% of the world’s freshwater usage, a rising population and rising temperatures require smarter – and more water-efficient – ways to grow crops. 🌊 South Korean startup Midbar believes its AirFarms could help solve this challenge. Inside these inflatable units, crops are grown using aeroponics – a method that involves suspending the plant’s roots in the air and spraying them with a nutrient-rich mist – rather than burying them in soil. Midbar (https://midbar.com) claims plants grown using an aeroponic method grow more quickly, and absorb more minerals and vitamins. In addition, the system delivers a 99% reduction in water usage and a 60% reduction in fertiliser usage compared with traditional growing methods. With setup for each AirFarm unit taking half a day, the company believes its solution could help improve food security, particularly in disaster zones and refugee camps. Earlier this month, Midbar’s system was recognised as a ‘Best of Innovation’ honored (https://lnkd.in/eNrxUQwF) at the US Consumer Technology Association’s CES Innovation Awards. • Kicking off the era of sustainable soccer ⚽ While football fans have delighted in another high-scoring and unpredictable African Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament, one footballer’s choice of footwear could have greater long-term significance than events on the pitch. Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong has become the first player to perform at a major tournament wearing sustainable boots. The 30-year-old centre-back is one of several footballers to have invested in Sokito (https://www.sokito.com), a startup that specialises in ‘bio-based boots’. For Afcon 2023, Troost-Ekong is wearing the company’s Scudetta boots, which have a suede lining and a tongue made from corn waste. The sole plate is made from castor beans while the insole has been constructed from bamboo and sugarcane. “This might be my last Afcon. I wanted to use it to get the message across that you can wear a sustainable boot and support a sustainable cause but still have a very nice looking football book that works exactly how it should do,” Troost-Ekong (https://lnkd.in/e7JPY6iv) told the Athletic. “When I get to wear the boots in training and matches I want to spread the message.” Sokito, which was founded in 2022, has also won awards for its efforts in setting up the world’s first football boot recycling scheme.
