World Sustainability Awards

Committing to progress in corporate sustainability requires a passion for change and resilience in order to succeed.

Businesses are having a powerful impact on improving sustainability in many ways, from the role their ESG campaigns are playing in raising sustainability awareness, to how they are designing their products and services to benefit both people and the planet.

We are striving to continue this momentum with the 2024 World Sustainability Awards spotlighting the outstanding organisations, leaders and their teams who are driving change and helping to build a better future.

Entries are now open for the World Sustainability Awards 2024.

Categories and Entry Criteria

Choose the categories for which you have clear evidence of the impact your project, team or organisation has made. There is no limit to the number of categories you may enter, but we recommend aiming for quality over quantity. Click on each category below for more detail about what the judges will be looking for.

Carbon Reduction Award

Partnered By

Recognising an organisation that is significantly reducing greenhouses gas emissions in its operations and value chain

Companies across the world are committing to reducing their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and ensuring global warming is kept to below 1.5°C. Leaders in this space are translating this intent into action, making fast progress to reduce their CO2 footprint – both in their direct operations and the wider value chain.

CO2 reductions include all three scopes of the business’s footprint:

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions from owned or controlled sources.
  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased energy.
  • Scope 3: Emissions in the wider value chain, including downstream in consumer use and upstream in the supply chain.

Judges will be looking for entries that highlight elements of how an organisation has:

  • Reduced GHGs across all three scopes.
  • Developed tools and techniques to address emissions.
  • Established metrics to demonstrate progress on GHG reductions.

Eligibility: Open to any company that has reduced CO2 levels across its direct operations and its value chain. Outlined initiatives must have been delivered and demonstrated an impact between June 2022 and December 2023.

Sustainable Supply Chain Award

Partnered By

Showcasing a company that demonstrates collaboration and innovation in addressing ESG issues in the supply chain

Supply chains account for a large proportion of many organisations’ environmental and social footprint. Addressing these impacts is a challenge for every business, with the size and complexity of modern-day supply chains making progress slow. This category recognises teams that are adopting innovative methods to identify ESG issues in their supply chains and are working collaboratively with suppliers to effect change.

Judges will be looking for entries that highlight elements of how the company:

  • Improves supplier environmental or social sustainability standards with quantifiable metrics.
  • Collaborates and innovates with suppliers to drive progress.
  • Ensures sustainability is embedded in regular purchasing activities.

Eligibility: Open to any company addressing sustainability in its supply chain. Outlined initiatives must have been delivered and made an impact between June 2022 and December 2023.

Sustainable Technology Provider of the Year Award

Recognising a technology provider that is having a transformative impact on the environment or society

Technology plays a crucial role in sustainability. Whether by reducing CO2 levels in the manufacturing process or gaining better visibility of supplier impacts, businesses cannot progress the ESG agenda without technological support. This category recognises technology providers that are helping accelerate corporate environmental or social performance through their solutions.

Judges will be looking for how the provider’s technology:

  • Provides value for money and a strong return on investment.
  • Addresses a real and significant challenge or opportunity in ESG.
  • Has been developed with usability as a priority.
  • Is future-proofed and able to fit within typical corporate environments.
  • Brings innovation to a company’s technology stack.

Eligibility: Open to solution providers that have developed an innovative sustainable technology for external use. Outlined initiatives must have been delivered and made an impact between June 2022 and December 2023.

Social Impact Award

Recognising organisations that are transforming people’s lives through how they do business

Companies can have a positive impact on how society functions. Whether by developing social initiatives through their core operations, the goods and services they provide, or throughout their supply chains, businesses have a far-reaching capacity to influence people’s lives. This category recognises an organisation that can demonstrate a positive impact on society through the way in which they do business.

Judges will be looking for entries that highlight how the company:

  • Positively impacts society through a programme or project.
  • Collaborates internally and externally to ensure the business can influence people’s lives for the better.
  • Ensures human rights standards are embedded in its operations.

Eligibility: Open to any company that can demonstrate successful social impact. Outlined initiatives must have been delivered and made an impact between June 2022 and December 2023.

Eco Design Award

Celebrating a newly launched product or service with sustainable design principles at its core

Both people and the planet benefit from products and services that are designed with sustainability in mind. Whether by encouraging efficiency, durability or reusability, leaders in this category are leveraging sustainability in design to improve ESG conditions across their end-to-end value chains. This award recognises one such product or service launched over the past 12 months.

Judges will be looking for entries that highlight how the new product or service:

  • Integrated ESG criteria in its concept and design.
  • Has delivered positive environmental or social benefits through its new design, evidenced by metrics.
  • Is innovative and disruptive in its focus on sustainability.

Eligibility: Open to any company that has launched a product or service with sustainable design at its centre. Outlined products or services must have been delivered and made an impact between June 2022 and December 2023.

Biodiversity Award

Recognising organisations that are going above and beyond to preserve the natural environment

Every business has a biodiversity footprint. Whether by disturbing local species, contributing to deforestation or overusing natural resources, the World Economic Forum predicts that businesses’ impact on nature could impact more than half of global GDP. This category recognises a business that is mitigating this impact and taking tangible steps to protect biodiversity.

Judges will be looking for entries that highlight how the company:

  • Has developed a robust and ambitious biodiversity strategy, with targets in place that proactively address biodiversity loss.
  • Made tangible progress towards reducing the business’s biodiversity footprint.
  • Is integrating biodiversity protection within its business model.

Eligibility: Open to any company that is making tangible progress towards reducing its biodiversity footprint. Outlined initiatives must have been delivered and made an impact between June 2022 and December 2023.

Communications Campaign Award

Recognising a campaign that is delivering environmental or social impact and influencing positive change

ESG campaigns play a critical role in improving sustainability. Whether by raising awareness, promoting positive change or encouraging a shift in behaviour, leaders in this category are demonstrating the powerful impact of communications in improving sustainability.

Judges will be looking for entries that highlight how the company:

  • Links its ESG strategy with an impactful communications campaign.
  • The ESG benefits this campaign has delivered, evidenced by metrics.
  • Has encouraged behavioural change through its communications.

Eligibility: Open to any company that has executed a campaign linked to its ESG strategy. Outlined campaigns must have been delivered and made an impact between June 2022 and December 2023.

Sustainability Excellence Award

Recognising the organisation leading the way in environmental and social sustainability

From an organisation’s environmental footprint to how it addresses social conditions, as well as racial and gender equality, how “sustainable” a business is can be determined by multiple indicators. Leading companies are making progress across the spectrum, systematically changing the way they operate to reduce their impact on the planet, foster inclusion and diversity, and improve the livelihoods of those affected by their business.

Judges will be looking for entries that highlight examples of how the company:

Makes improvements in at least one of the following environmental areas:

  • GHG emissions management.
  • Water management.
  • Waste reduction.
  • Circular economy.
  • Clean energy production.

Addresses and makes improvements in at least one of the following social sustainability areas:

  • Forced and child labour.
  • Human rights.
  • Community impact.
  • Gender equality.
  • Racial equality.

Entrants should ensure they:

  • Clearly demonstrate their impact in at least one environmental and one social area.
  • Explain how the organisation has made innovative advances in these areas, with details on projects undertaken, performance metrics and governance in place.
  • Provide a detailed sustainability strategy that illustrates how the business will continue to develop sustainability in the medium to long term.

Eligibility: Open to any company that can demonstrate ESG improvements across its business and value chain. Outlined initiatives must have been delivered and made an impact between June 2022 and December 2023.

Sustainability Team Award

Showcasing a sustainability team that shares a clear purpose, drives progress, and effects change

The sustainability function is critical in modern business. To achieve their ESG targets and grow sustainably, businesses now look to their sustainability teams to lead the way. This category recognises the team that works collaboratively towards a shared sustainability purpose. This team will demonstrate initiative, creativity, and resilience to effect change in their organisation and improve ESG conditions.

Judges will be looking for entries that highlight how the company:

  • Built a high-performing team with a culture of openness and trust.
  • Improved ESG performance thanks to the unique contribution of the team.
  • Fostered a culture for sustainability around the business.
  • Broke down silos and encouraged cross-functional collaboration on ESG improvements.
  • Developed capabilities in the team that future proof the function.

Eligibility: Open to corporate sustainability teams, an alternative department that can demonstrate sustainable impact. Outlined initiatives must have been delivered and made an impact between June 2022 and December 2023.

Sustainability Leader of the Year Award

Celebrating the senior-most sustainability leader who empowers their team, inspires progress and focuses on delivering sustainable growth

Sustainability leaders are changing how modern businesses operate. By implementing new ways of working, building teams and inspiring those around them, they are leading the way to a more sustainable future. The Sustainability Leader of the Year Award is open to Chief Sustainability Officers or the senior-most ESG executive within the organisation.

Judges will be looking for entries that highlight elements of how the leader has:

  • Introduced innovative approaches and techniques that have advanced sustainability throughout the organisation.
  • Built a high-performing team.
  • Accelerated progress against the company’s sustainability targets.
  • Fostered sustainable growth in different functions of the business.

Eligibility: Open to the senior-most sustainability leader within either large corporates or SMEs. Outlined initiatives must have been delivered and made an impact between June 2022 and December 2023.

Future Leader Award

Highlighting an individual to watch for the future – a high performer who is passionate about the environment and social justice, and set to have a lasting impact on sustainability

Recognising and developing future leaders is crucial to ensuring a more sustainable way of conducting business. These are the individuals at the earlier stages of their career who will transform the way in which companies approach environmental and social issues, paving the way towards a more sustainable future.

Judges will be looking for entries that highlight elements of how the individual has:

  • Made a significant contribution to sustainability in the company.
  • Gone above and beyond expectations to deliver ESG improvements.
  • Displayed creativity, inclusivity and innovation in how they work.
  • Stood out from the crowd and demonstrated initiative.

Eligibility: Open to any individual, regardless of business function, who is significantly impacting sustainability in their organisation. Outlined initiatives must have been delivered and made an impact between June 2022 and December 2023.

Sustainable Finance Initiative Award

Recognising a company that has integrated ESG principles into its finance and investment strategies

ESG principles are increasingly being integrated into businesses’ financial strategies. Whether by aligning ESG disclosures with financial disclosures, investing in sustainable businesses or deploying ESG investment for positive outcomes, finance programmes can play an essential role in furthering the sustainability agenda.

Judges will be looking for entries that demonstrate:

  • How the finance initiative benefits ESG outcomes, with attention paid to metrics.
  • How sustainability principles are being integrated in the company’s finance strategy.
  • Collaboration between the company’s finance department and relevant ESG stakeholders.

Eligibility: Open to any company with a finance initiative that is focused on improving ESG outcomes. Outlined initiatives must have been delivered and made an impact between June 2022 and December 2023.

External Collaboration Award

Showcasing a collaboration between two organisations that is having a positive and lasting impact on sustainability

Organisations cannot address sustainability conditions across their value chains alone. To make progress, businesses must partner with a range of external stakeholders – from consumers to suppliers, to local governments and NGOs. This award recognises one such collaboration and its positive impact on sustainability.

Judges will be looking for entries that highlight how the collaboration:

  • Delivered results and had a significant impact on sustainability, with metrics to substantiate this impact.
  • Was initiated and developed by both parties.
  • Was managed to ensure both parties could work together in a clear and collaborative fashion.

Eligibility: Open to any two organisations that have collaborated on sustainability, including corporates, NGOs and governments. Outlined initiatives must have been delivered and made an impact between June 2022 and December 2023.
