Biodiversity Award

Winner: Maynilad Water Services

Entry Overview

Maynilad has dealt with abnormally turbid raw water and flooded facilities because of the denuded state of the watersheds and coasts that border its water sources and operations. To help reverse this degradation, Maynilad launched the ‘Plant for Life’ programme. Originally created to reforest the watersheds in Angat, Ipo and La Mesa, it later became a multi-site reforestation programme that includes the areas along the Manila Bay coast and Laguna Lake. Since its inception in 2007, Maynilad has engaged 14,000 volunteers from 400 organisations to reforest 1,309 hectares of denuded watersheds with tree sampling and mangrove propagules. Maynilad’s decision to include biodiversity conservation in its business strategy helps protect the water supply for millions of consumers, it also rallies more individuals to take part in environmental rehabilitation efforts, delivering sustainable benefits for present and future generations.
