Carbon Reduction Award
Winner: HEINEKEN
Entry Overview
HEINEKEN has been consistently reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions since 2018 by significantly increasing renewable energy consumption in its production and logistics operations, and improving energy efficiency. Moreover, HEINEKEN also reduced its Scope 3 emissions by implementing several initiatives, including: engaging with suppliers to increase their reliance on renewable energy; investing in catalyst solutions to signal demand in the market; and continuously optimising its processes and product design. In 2023, HEINEKEN reduced its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 18% compared with 2022. The company achieved a 13% reduction in its total carbon footprint across all three scopes compared with 2022 and a 5% reduction in carbon intensity (Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions / HL beverages sold) year-on-year. All of these have been achieved while HEINEKEN acquires new businesses and integrates them into its decarbonisation journey, including United Breweries Ltd. in India, which increased HEINEKEN’s overall carbon footprint by 6%.
