Eco Design Award
Winner: Flora Food Group
Entry Overview
After four years of collaboration and innovation between Upfield, Footprint, MCC Verstraete, Pagès and Emsur, the first recyclable paper-based tub for plant-based spreads was launched. It is made from compressed wet paper fibres and is waterproof, oil-proof, and recyclable. The tub has received Conventional Plastic Free Certification and uses paper from PEFC-certified suppliers. It’s a mono-material, fully recyclable, wet fibre, moulded packaging. Unlike many paper packaging solutions Upfield’s paper tubs do not have a plastic liner. This means that once cleaned and dried, they can be recycled along with other paper and cardboard household waste – as verified by a leading European recycling company.
The tubs accomplish what many thought to be impossible, as they’re durable, oil-resistant and appealing. Upfield aims to replace up to two billion plastic tubs by 2030, eliminating more than 25,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year.
